ADVANCED PLACEMENT LITERATURE
Katie as a reader and writer:
Katie Flanagan has been an avid reader her entire life. While most people learn to read in elementary school, or by observing their surroundings, Katie at the ripe age of 4, began private reading and writing lessons with her nanny. Her parents then encouraged this growth by reading Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia to her every night before bed. Because of this, Katie has always been one to read for pleasure. Even if for her studies, she finds a way to enjoy the text. However, other people read for a variety of reasons: to learn, to relax, to escape, to seek guidance, even to please others. It all stems from communication and how individuals interact with spoken and written word. Katie believes to be a good reader someone must only do one thing, and that is be active. They must focus on what they’re reading and think about how it applies to their life. If confused, they should look up the challenging vocabulary or consult grammar rules. They should never muddle along in a passive state confused. Katie has always been an active reader and finds reading easy because she enjoys it. However on the rare occasion that a book is written in a very choppy style she will get annoyed. And, of course, Katie is a busy bodied individual – so finding time to read is always a challenge. But when faced with free time Katie always looks for a nice adventure-romance story, something that allows her to forget about her day. And she does this quite often. At home Katie reads for approximately 2 hours before bed each night. So it is safe to say that she truly enjoys reading and will find comfort in books for the rest of her life.
Katie does not just read though, she also enjoys writing. As stated previously she learned from her nanny, though she really ironed out her script in kindergarten. Other people learn to write by observing others or possibly in school like Katie. Writing is important as a mean of communication, and almost everyone does it. Some as a way to express themselves and others out of necessity, whether in the work force or not, writing is a part of everyday life. To write well someone must practice and unlike reading, it takes time to develop a fluent style and strong voice. Katie’s voice can be best heard in short stories. Her ideas come from observations she records in her writer’s journal (which she created in sixth grade). Examples of things that Katie deems noteworthy are boys running in the field you pass while driving or the smell of popcorn at a high school football game. When dealing with feedback in writing (and life) she prefers straight forward notes about what needs to be corrected mixed with praise. The frequency with which Katie can write varies though. When struck by inspiration she will spend a great deal of time writing, likewise, when busy, she may go months without writing for herself. Currently, Katie is writing a lot of college application essays. These essays have given Katie many opportunities to evaluate her writing style and she believes she is a pretty average writer. However, when finished with a story or essay, Katie usually feels proud of what she has written.
