This week we began watching "I Believes" I couldn't be more impressed with my classmates. I am blow away. BLOWN AWAY! By their thoughts and insights. Seeing some of my friends talk about challenges in their life publicly was so incredible! And even though I am not a religious person, seeing some of my classmate's complete faith in god has made me appreciate the guidance religion can offer others.
My favorite video was Kate's. I have always loved Kate as a writer. With every project we have done sense 11th grade, I always ask to read hers because she has such a talent. I'm not sure why I'm surprised her video was any different. It was so raw and touching and unique. "What a way to fall through space" is a thought I now have flittering through my head every once in a while. Crowded school hallways, driving to skate practice in Bay City, listening to my friends laugh-- what a way indeed. Most of the video were commercial fiction, but Kate's? Hers was literature.
By watching these videos it was interesting to see how people's minds work. We had the potential to share virtually anything. And seeing what people chose to share, from those who talked about abusive relationships and eating disorders, to those who talked about the power of happiness and music-- it was all so fascinating. Humans tend to be pretty self-absorbed by nature, or at least I think they are. But with these "I Believe" projects we all had to sit down for a solid hour and listen to others. And really listen. Not the nod of a head as Becky complains about John, or the heated debate shared between acquaintances regarding a movie. But the honest kind of listening, when people show a piece of their soul. That just sounded really cheesy. But I am just so surprised and humbled by the newfound respect and admiration I have for the people around me. This is a project I think I will remember for a long while.
