This week we learned about the Estimating with Finite Sums. This is essentially the process of accurately guessing the area beneath a curve. I really really like this unit so far and am ready to redeem myself as a good math student! We did a really fun activity where we had to find the area of shapes. The first one was easy because it could be broken down to be a rectangle, circle, and triangle. The second shape was a cloud though, and proved way more challenging. My table decided to draw in a grid of 1cm X 1cm squares and we were actually pretty accurate. Although Isaac just flat out guessed and was pretty close… but that's Isaac. The only problem with the grid method was that it took forever. So that is where the estimating with finite sums activity comes in. We looked at graphs and drew rectangles underneath to guess the area. Have I mentioned that I like this unit? It is just ver straight forward and manageable. I can't wait to see where it takes us next!
